The Three Cranes, Turvey, Bedfordshire

The Three Cranes is set back from the main Bedford to Northampton road next to the church. It's a hotel as well offering accommodation but when entering through the front door in you would be forgiven for thinking that it's primarily a pub.

Owned by the Country Pub company it's a free house offering real ales from a variety of brewers. There are usually four different beers on offer but the pub is known locally as a good place to go for a pub meal. Prices of meals are not cheap but it's not the normal soup in a basket fare. Although the normal bar snacks are available don't miss the daily specials chalked up on a board above the bar. For around £6 to £9 you can get a meal with such things as beef cooked in Guniness or poached salmon all with seasonal vegetables The quality of the food and cooking is always first class. The Ouse Valley Ramblers held their Christmas 2000 meal there so we vote with our taste buds as well as our feet.

As can be expected with a pub such as this it is popular with the locals and can get very busy so get there early for a table. There is a small restaurant section for which you have to book for but the bar is first come, first served (but you can reserve these as well with a phone call)

The Turvey area is a nice place to base a walk and this pub should please most people the combination for which should be a make good day out.

Also try the recently re-opened Ye Three Fyshes.
