Sharnbrook Village

Sharnbrook is a large village in the north of the county, just off the main A6 road, with the river Ouse flowing to the south.

There has been a settlement here since at least Saxon times. In the 12th century the Knights Templars held land here, followed by the Knights Hospitallers until the Reformation. In the 17th century mat making was a local craft, using rushes from the river banks.

The parish church of St Peter is Norman, enlarged in the 13th century. It had a more impressive tower built in the 14th century and the church itself was restored in 1855. It has a large north chapel and outside in the churchyard can be found the Magniac family mausoleum. The Magniacs owned Colworth Manor House in the 19th century.
